In the 1990s, interest and research in the area of stratum corneum and skin barrier was largely limited. Professors who realized the importance of basic research and who have also expressed their interest in skin barrier came together for their first meeting on June 10, 1995.
Professor Seung Hun Lee of Yonsei University, who was trained at UCSF, Professor Do Won Kim of Kyungpook National University and Professor Sung Ku Ahn of Yonsei Wonju Medical College, who takes interest in microscopic morphology, agreed to hold a symposium on the stratum corneum and skin barrier.
Professor Hyung Ok Kim of the Catholic University of Korea and Prof. Kee Chan Moon from the Ulsan University Medical Center joined in at Aug. 12, 1995.




  • 1995  Founding of the Society

    - The first symposium was held on Aug. 26 at Yeongdong Severance Hospital Auditorium before the founding of the Society. The symposium consisted of a special lecture by Dr. Gopinathan K. Menon and 7 presentations, and was a success with more than 100 attendees. It was evident that there was a need for the Society.

    - Professors Lee, Do Won Kim, Ahn, Hyung Ok Kim and Moon met on two occasions (October 13, Walker-Hill Hotel, November 9, the Paradise Hotel in Busan) and decided to establish a formal Society on skin barrier research.

    - A council of nine physicians (Dermatology Professors at Universities) and 5 PhDs with more than 6 years of post-doc experience at research institutes was established on December 18. Professor Soo Il Chung (Advisor), Professor Hyung Ok Kim (President), Kee Chan Moon (Vice President), Woo-Shik Kim, Prof Lee Seung Hun and Professor Sung Ku Ahn were appointed as board members. The honorary members were Prof. Peter M. Elias and Dr. Gopinathan K. Menon.

  • 1996  Holding of the 2nd Symposium

    - In March, the key rules and the name of the Society (The Stratum Corneum and Skin Barrier Research Society) were announced with there was an addition in board members.

    - On August 31st, The Society’s second symposium was held. Professor Philp W. Wertz from the University of Iowa gave a wonderful lecture.

  • 1997  The Official Name of the Society

    - On August 29th, the 3rd Stratum Corneum and Skin Barrier Research Conference was held at Seoul Asan Hospital, Dr. Waller M. Holleran gave a lecture which was appreciated by many.

    - On November 4th, the Korean Society for Skin Barrier Research became the official name of the Society and there were further addition of board members.

  • 1998  Holding the 4th Academic Conference

    - On February 22nd, the Society opened its doors to physicians, university professors and researchers and decided on the Society Logo, Journal and lifetime membership fees.

    - On September 4th, Dr. Mao-Qiang Man gave a special lecture at the Yongdong Severance Hospital.

    - On Nov. 30th, 8 new council members were appointed. Professor Genji Imokawa was to be the special invited lecturer at the 5th Symposium, and the Korean Skin Barrier Journal (official name) was decided to be issued with the details being discussed.

  • Present

    - We hold a workshop in the first half of each year and an annual meeting in the second half of the year. The most recent annual meeting on September 1, 2017 was the 23rd conference.

    - Our Society is characterized by wide variety of members in all fields. Dermatologists, researchers in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry, and pharmacology professors are some of our main professionals.
    As for the Society’s future plans, we hope to hold international conferences, improve the quality of our journal and invite lecturers and members from overseas for the growth of the Society.
